We threaded ourselves back through the mall on streets with good shoulders and worked our way to the train station. To board Amtrak to get back to Buffalo, you have to take your panniers off and set them on the platform, while you manuever your bike to the hooks. My folder just goes on the floor at the baggage end of the car, but Dwight's requires a removal of the front wheel and is then hung from its rear wheel.
In every case, the conductors knew who we were and were expecting the bikes. In every case, they helped us get the panniers onto the train and made sure we had everything before the doors closed. It is awkward, since the entries are so narrow and both in Rome, NY and here, the platform was not even with the train, requiring us to hoist the bikes up the stairs. Still, not a bad way to go. Beats the plane and driving.
