47 miles Dewitt to Rome
Old Erie Canal Park trail section, more double track dirt and limestone. We paused for a break (no coffee shops!) at Verona at a park with water and bathrooms. Dwight ate the leftover fries and pretzels from dinner a few nights ago and I had a motley crew of foodstuffs, including pancake bread loaf (nothing unusual, more like a plain breakfast loaf) and granola bar… but when we started out again, Dwight's tire was flat. Pumped it up and it lasted all the way to Rome.
Cute coffee shop in Rome, next door to a refurbished theatre. Pinocchio was playing.
Google Maps (and also Ride with GPS) SAID we could go one way, but the road was barred by a giant gate and fence. Kids on the other side directed us to an opening in the fence (if you want the real skinny, ask the local kids), and we pushed our bikes across a playing field to get to the Wyndham hotel. We passed on the two downtown Rome motels, after reading many super negative reviews. Unfortunately, this hotel was outside of town and not really connected to Rome. Rome has put in some bike paths, but their efforts seem very disjointed and unplanned. Also, city planners seem to be supporting new development on the outskirts, while ignoring downtown. Everything may center around perceived "parking problems", the same justifications used in other cities. We rode back towards downtown for dinner at a Mexican restaurant.
